When Richard Hollis worked for the Whitechapel Art Gallery, a distinctive British graphic designer was joined with a special institution. This book traces the separate histories of the designer and the gallery, and then examines in detail the work they did together, in two periods between 1969 and 1985. Christopher Wilson gives a fully rounded account of both the designer and the commissioner - illuminated by his interviews with gallery's directors and curators, with artists whose work was shown, as well as with Hollis and with those who assisted him. The book thus operates on several fronts. It provides a history of the Whitechapel and an account of how a public gallery in London functioned in these years. it delineates the means of print production at a time when they were changing fundamentally, and it offers another way of discussing the ubiquitous and ephemeral thing that we call 'graphic design'.
